Following a solid, if unspectacular, start to the Olympic Games in Rio for Ireland’s competitors things start to ramp up on Day 2.

The reputation of Irish boxing, so long a source of deep national pride, has been dented by Michael O’Reilly’s positive dope test but two of his team mates will be hoping to take the spotlight off the scandal and onto sport.

The rowing, due to feature Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe and Gary O'Donovan and Paul O'Donovan in the Lightweight Double Sculls, has been postponed due to choppy waters and bad weather.

1.45pm, Gymnastics, Ellis O’Reilly

At just 18, O’Reilly is Ireland’s youngest competitor and the Kent-born gymnast only recently finished her A Levels with intentions of studying PE teaching after the Games. Before that though, she has the small matter of a women’s all around qualifying round.

2.32pm and 6.10pm, Three Day Eventing, Jonty Evans and Mark Kyle

Mark Kyle at 43 is Ireland’s third-oldest Olympian at Rio 2016 and he’ll be in action alongside the second-oldest - Jonty Evans (44). The other half of Ireland’s three day eventing team, Clare Abbott and Padraig McCarthy, performed well on Day 1.

4.15pm, Boxing - Men’s 69kg, Stephen Donnelly

The 27-year-old Ballymena man has come a long way since almost quitting the fight game in 2010. He won a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He’ll be expected to beat Algerian Zohir Kedache, but knows a tricky bout is ahead of him.

POSTPONED, Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls, Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe

Lambe (26) is going to study in Cambridge after the games and her crew-mate Jennings (39) is a busy mother of three and qualified doctor. This pair represent an good outside shot of an Irish medal, though they’ll have to deal with the choppy waters of Brazil’s Lagoa as well as top class opposition.

POSTPONED, Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls, Gary O’Donovan and Paul O’Donovan

The O’Donovan brothers from Skibbereen, Gary 23 and Paul 22, are a pair of live-wires and they say that they’re ready to take on the world. They are capable of doing it too despite the tough conditions in Rio.

6.03pm, 100m Breaststroke, Fiona Doyle

The Limerick swimmer (24) is based in Calgary in the Canadian mid-west. She sets high goals for herself and aims to swim a personal best in Rio, though she knows a performance of a lifetime will be required to make a final.

6.17pm, 100m Backstroke, Shane Ryan

He was born and bred just outside Philadelphia in the United States, but his nine aunts and uncles in Portarlington, Co Laois will cheering him on in Ireland. Ryan is racing in the fastest company he’ll see and a personal best will be his minimum aim - that may be good enough to get out of his heat.

9.30pm, Boxing - Men's 60kg, David Oliver Joyce

At 29-years-old David Oliver Joyce is the longest-serving of Ireland high performance boxers and after missing out on the Beijing and London Games his dedication has been rewarded. It would be a major surprise if he isn’t a comfortable winner against Andrique Allisop from the Seychelles.

10pm, Hockey, Ireland v Netherlands

Ireland were unlucky losers to India, one of world hockey’s superpowers, on Day 1 and they have an immediate opportunity to bounce back against the Netherlands. However it won’t be easy - the Dutch are ranked two in the world. Conditions at the hockey venue are tough, with the heat rising near to 40 degrees.
